Boris Trajkovski Aqua Park Opens in Macedonia’s Capital
Opening ceremonies attended by the Prime Minister Mr. Nikola Gruevski and the City’s Mayor Mr. Koce Trajanovski
The new government-funded Boris Trajkovski Aqua Park in Skopje, Macedonia celebrated its opening with a special ceremony on July 21, 2013. Home to about one third of the Balkan country’s population, Skopje is the largest city in Macedonia, as well as its capital.
Ratko Kapusevski, Boris Trajkovski Aqua Park’s director, said that they “expect this new aqua park will allow our area to provide guests with even more reasons to visit our remarkable city.” The attraction compliments the city’s “Skopje 2014” operation, a project with the focus of building on the area’s historic roots. Along with the new aqua park, the project has included the erection of new statues, fountains, bridges, and museums.
Skopje 2014 dream begins to take shape
Prime Minister Mr. Nikola Gruevski, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony in January, was joined by Skopje’s Mayor Mr. Koce Trajanovski at the opening ceremonies for the city’s first aqua park. The investment, named after former president Boris Trajkovski whose presidency ended when he died in a 2004 plane crash on his way to an economic summit, is estimated to be around just EUR€4.2 million, and was built by Polin Waterparks & Pool Systems of Turkey.
Representatives from Polin also attended the ceremony, including President Dr. Baris Pakis and Head of Sales and Design, Dr. Kubilay Alpdogan.
“Polin is honored to supply our rides for this project. The government was committed turning this dream into reality. ” Mr. Baris Pakis said Sunday, citing the fact that it is the first aqua park in the city. “It was an absolute pleasure to work in Macedonia, and we look forward to partnerships in the future.”
A Perfect Playground
With summertime precipitation rarely an issue, Skopje’s climate lends itself well to the attractions of a waterpark. Most rainfall in Skopje occurs from April to June and October to December. Summers are long, hot, and humid with average temperatures of 31° C (88° F), though high temperatures sometimes reach 40° C (104° F).
Construction for the waterpark began in March, and despite taking place during the rainy season, the park was open in time for summer. Kapusevski says the waterpark “will be Skopje’s main summer attraction,” while providing “a direct impact on local tourism efforts and on the Karpos municipality’s economy.” The park also has 35 lifeguards and created at least 40 new jobs.
Using its new office in Macedonia, Polin worked with local Macedonian construction and electrical companies, Zikol and Elektrounion, to build the facility. It includes 10 waterslides, a children’s pool, a wave pool, a leisure river, an administrative building, a restaurant and bar, bathrooms, dressing rooms, and a first-aid station.
Specifically, some of the major attractions at the new park includes:
- A Multisurf waterslide with head-first mat racing.
- A Turbolance with Flying Boats, an extreme slide with a water-propelled uphill ride followed by steep drops that end in a splash pool.
- A Space Boat, which combines the elements of Polin’s Space Hole with its Black Hole attraction.
- A Body Slide that propels riders along a slide of both drops and straight-aways at different speeds.
- An Aquatube, a fast ride that can include both visual and auditory special effects.
- A kids area with a rabbit slide, giraffe shower, mushroom fountain, mini octopus slide and a pirate-themed multi-level water-play structure with slides, tipping buckets, water cannons and net climbs.
