Space Race waterslide achieves second top honor
After winning IAAPA’s Brass Ring last fall, Polin’s Space Race is named among 25 Most Valuable Products for 2016 by Aquatics International magazine.
Turkey – April 28, 2017 – The readers of Aquatics International magazine have voted, and Polin Waterpark’s Space Race Waterslide has come out on top as one of the top 25 Most Valuable Products in the magazine’s annual competition. This is the second year in a row for Polin Waterparks to be named among the magazine’s winners. Last year, readers chose Polin’s Super Combo ride to receive the same award.
The 25 top products are chosen by reader in response to the magazine’s January New Products Issue. The award-winning products cover all parts of the aquatics spectrum, from outdoor furniture and in-pool loungers to slides and interactive water features, pool equipment, cleaning items and more.
A second victory for the attraction
Winning Aquatic International’s MVP award was not the first honor for Space Race. Last November, the attraction was recognized with another prestigious honor when it was awarded a Brass Ring for Best New Product from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. That annual award recognizes the best new product or service in the category of Water Park Ride/Attraction category in Class A (for products costing US$2 million or more).
Many aspects deserving of honors
The advanced waterslide delivers a uniquely competitive riding experience: It is the first bowl waterslide of its kind that allows groups of riders to compete against one another. The attraction showcases a unique, streamlined design, distinctive entry tower and quadruple rafts.
At first glance, the ride may look like other bowl-type slides — including Polin’s own Space Boat, a tube ride that launches from a tower and shoots riders through a chute and into a bowl where centrifugal force sends them spinning around the bowl before they plummet through the center.
But the similarities between the Space Race and all other family slides end there.
A wholly new opportunity for fun
Space Race gives groups of riders a chance to compete as they urge their teammates to be the fastest in crossing the finish line. The slide pits two four-rider family rafts against each other. The rafts enter the bowl from opposite directions at a speed of more than 43 kilometers per hour (27 miles per hour). Separated by a patent-pending divider, the eight riders follow identical helical routes, starting at the perimeter and ending at the center of the bowl. The giant specially designed basin allows the racing teams to see each other as they careen around the bowl, providing incentive for them to lean, bend, crouch and tilt in every way possible to give them an advantage in increasing their speed to gain an edge over their opponents.
Eventually, the teams exit the bowl at the center, shooting in opposite directions as they finalize their sliding adventure via two separate but identical dry or pool run-outs.
A towering distinction
An additional unique characteristic of the Space Race is its entry tower. Riders begin building their adrenaline rush even before they step into the rafts due to the tower’s design. It allows riders to see other teams as they wait their turn to race. Measuring up the competition, teams can begin to develop their “secret” competitive advantage for racing through the 218-meter (715-foot) slide path.
Once they reach the tower’s top, each team faces the same challenge, encountering a heart-pounding rush as they speed through every twist and turn while safely separated from collisions. At the end, riders can congratulate one another as the winner is announced.
Specs on this specialty ride include:
- Maximum capacity (120 x 8 riders per hour)
- Optional “Natural Light Effects” (which allows the sun’s rays to stream into the tube via translucent stripes and/or other designs to create a different experience on every ride), “Natural Sound Effects” and “Special Pattern Effects” (which allow a variety of theming and patterns on the slide’s surface)
- Unique tower centered between the two raft entry points
- A “shared” slide experience with others in the queue
- A distinctive, attention-grabbing appearance with the attraction’s massive size and iconic design
- Exclusive options when combined with other slides via specialty design considerations offered in consultation with Polin’s design team professionals
- Translucent applications
- A 13/20 percent slope
- Resin-transfer molding (RTM) technology to create perfectly smooth, shiny slide components inside and outside with perfect component alignment.
- Bowl size of 5 meters (16 feet) high by 26 meters (85 feet) in diameter and an angle of 15 degrees.
- Unlimited theming possibilities.
Advantages for both families and operators
Onursal Gülistanoglu, R&D Design Manager of Polin Waterparks says, “Family slides have always been an important part of the waterslide world because they allow families and friends to enjoy time together, sharing the experience. That benefit is important for operators, too. The more people who can ride simultaneously, the better a facility can manage its queues. That makes high-capacity rides increasingly important.”
But, he added, moving people through queues is only a part of family rides’ advantages. Parks also must deliver experiences that provide guests with a thrill. That makes bowl slides a must-have attraction for all waterparks. And Polin’s Space Race meets — and exceeds — all of these requirements.
Currently, guests at Oasis Waterpark in Çeşme, Turkey, can experience the thrill of the Space Race. In 2018, two other parks in Asia — including one in China — will install the attraction.
